LAS VEGAS, NAB Booth SU906, April 15, 2007 :

The expanding family of Sony’s XDCAM® HD Professional Disc™ system includes new models that strengthen the benefits of an optical disc workflow. The new models include the PDW-F355 camcorder, the PDW-F75 deck, and the PDW-U1 drive unit, as well as a new dual-layer 50GB optical :disc media, model PFD50DLA.

“Since it was first introduced, Sony designed the XDCAM system to be flexible enough to grow and expand as customers’ production requirements change,” said Bob Ott, vice president of optical and network systems in Sony Electronics’ Broadcast and Production Systems Division. “These new products take the capabilities of tapeless production to new levels.”

> The PDW-F355 camcorder uses a ½-inch imager and delivers 24P gen-lock capabilities directly out of the HD-SDI output, for multi-camera shoots, as well as the ability to down-convert with edge cropping. Longer record times are also available by supporting the new dual-layer 50GB Professional Disc. A “live and play” function allows users to do clean, live switching between camera output and playback of pre-recorded content, useful for news crews doing stand-ups, for example. The PDW-F355 unit features several standard-definition enhancements, such as cache and interval recording capabilities in DVCAM™ mode. It also has an angle setting for shutter speed and a color LCD “under-scan” display.

> The PDW-F75 deck and the new dual-layer, 50 GB Professional Disc media offer greater recording capabilities and more long-term archiving options. The deck allows for DVCAM recording through an SD baseband input, with the use of the PDBK-104 option board connected to an SD-SDI or composite input. The PDW-F75 also supports standard-definition closed captioning, and has an additional REC select menu, which can be triggered through the HD-SDI input for video assist applications.
Users can record more HD content with the dual-layer disc and the new drive – approximately 2.5 hours at 35Mbps, 3.3 hours at 25Mbps HD, and 4.5 hours at 18Mbps HD. In DVCAM mode, users can record approximately 3.3 hours of content.

> The new XDCAM PDW-U1 drive has single- and dual-layer disc capabilities and offers read-write functions. This external drive works with both the XDCAM standard- and high-definition systems. The drive supports both the Virtual File Access Mode and Simple Access Mode protocols. The new drive is being supported by major manufacturers of non-linear editing systems. The new XDCAM HD products – the PDW-F355 camcorder, PDW-F75 deck, PDW-U1 drive unit and the PFD50DLA dual-layer disc are planned to be available in September.
